AMA Survey Reveals Growing Physician Adoption of AI in Healthcare
The survey highlights that one in five doctors now utilizes AI for visit documentation, discharge summaries, and care plans.
A new survey by the American Medical Association (AMA) shows a significant rise in the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) by physicians across the United States.
The findings reveal that AI use cases in healthcare nearly doubled, reaching 66% in 2024, compared to 38% in 2023.
The survey highlights that physicians increasingly see AI as a tool to reduce administrative burdens. One in five doctors now utilizes AI for visit documentation, discharge summaries, and care plans.
Additionally, AI applications in medical research have more than doubled, with 13% of physicians using AI for research in 2024, up from 6% in the previous year.
Growing Confidence in AI’s Potential
Physicians’ attitudes toward AI are also shifting. The survey found that 36% of physicians in 2024 reported feeling more excited than concerned about AI, compared to 30% in 2023.
Moreover, 68% acknowledged that AI provides at least some benefit to patient care, up from 63% the previous year.
The most recognized AI use cases among physicians include translation services, discharge instructions, medical documentation, billing code documentation, patient-facing chatbots, medical research summaries, and assistive diagnosis.
Regulatory Oversight & AI Integration Remain Key
Despite the growing enthusiasm, nearly half of surveyed physicians emphasized the need for increased oversight by governing bodies, such as the FDA, to build trust in AI adoption.
The survey also identified key factors that could support wider AI integration in healthcare, including effective feedback mechanisms, data privacy protections, seamless workflow integration, and proper training.
As AI continues to evolve, its role in healthcare is expected to expand further, helping physicians streamline operations and enhance patient care.
