Amgen Opens New Tech & Innovation Center in Hyderabad with $200 Mn Investment

US-based biopharmaceutical giant Amgen inaugurated its new technology and innovation center in Hyderabad on Monday, marking its first facility in India.

The company’s CEO, Robert Bradway, announced a commitment of $200 million (approximately INR 1,600 crore) towards the facility through 2025, with plans for further investments in the coming years.

Located in the heart of Hyderabad’s IT hub, Madhapur, the state-of-the-art center spans 5.24 lakh square feet and can accommodate up to 3,000 employees.

The facility aims to accelerate Amgen’s global digital capabilities and enhance its pipeline of medicines through advanced technology solutions.

Amgen’s Expansion Plans

Som Chattopadhyay, Amgen's National Executive in India, highlighted the rapid hiring process, noting that the first 300 employees were onboarded within just 78 days of signing the contract.

An additional 300 hires are expected soon, with the workforce projected to exceed 2,000 employees by the end of 2024.

Speaking at the inauguration, Telangana Chief Minister Anumula Revanth Reddy emphasized the strategic importance of Amgen’s investment in positioning Telangana as a key global life sciences hub.

He reiterated the state government's ambition to make Telangana a $1 trillion GDP economy and its commitment to becoming a preferred destination under the "China Plus One" strategy.

Boosting AI, Data Science, & Life Sciences Capabilities

The Hyderabad center will focus on building and scaling new technology solutions, leveraging artificial intelligence (AI), data science, and life sciences expertise.

Amgen India, the new entity, will play a critical role in strengthening various business functions across the global organization, enhancing efficiencies and driving innovation.

Amgen chose Hyderabad due to its strong talent pool in medicine, life sciences, and AI. The company has secured six floors in the RMZ Spire project, strategically positioning itself within Hyderabad’s thriving IT district.

Amgen, which reported revenues exceeding $28 billion in 2023, employs over 28,000 people worldwide across nearly 100 countries, including India.
