The device enhances spasticity management and range of motion in post-stroke care, while also reducing lower limb edema in orthopedic cases.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Hospital has integrated the geko device, a neuromuscular electro-stimulator, into its physiotherapy protocols for neuro and orthopedic rehabilitation patients.

The development was announced by Sky Medical Technology, the UK-based manufacturer of the device and parent company of Firstkind.

According to BMC, the device is being used across its hospital group in combination with conventional therapy to support patients recovering from stroke and orthopedic trauma. It is aimed at improving spasticity and range of motion in post-stroke care and aiding in the reduction of lower limb oedema in both pre- and post-operative orthopedic cases.

Commenting on the development, Bernard Ross, CEO and Founder of Sky Medical Technology, said, “By seamlessly complementing existing treatments, the geko device not only accelerates recovery but empowers patients to take control of their rehabilitation journey.”

Supports Early Mobilization and Home-Based Rehab

Applied just below the knee, the geko device delivers gentle electrical pulses to stimulate the common peroneal nerve. This activation enhances venous, arterial, and microcirculatory blood flow, replicating around 60% of the effect of walking. Its non-invasive application allows for early mobilization and potential home therapy continuation.

Additionally, the device is beneficial in preventing deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in immobile and medically at-risk patients.

Dr Haridas Rathod, CMO at BMC, said, “When used immediately following a stroke or orthopaedic surgery, adjunctive use of the geko device allows physiotherapy to begin sooner and enables continuation in the home setting. Its ease of use empowers patients to take control and self-manage their rehabilitation. By reducing the hands-on physiotherapist time, the geko device generates significant cost savings for the BMC.”
