The Delhi government will begin distributing Ayushman Bharat health cards to seniors aged 70 and above under the Pradhan Mantri Vaya Vandana Yojana (PMVVY) at Thyagaraj Stadium today.

This initiative is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to improve healthcare accessibility for elderly residents.

Health Cards for Elderly Citizens

Delhi CM Rekha Gupta emphasized the importance of the scheme, particularly for senior citizens, who are often the most vulnerable regarding healthcare needs. “This age group is the most in need of medical care. The government is fully accountable to them and will ensure they receive complete care on a priority basis,” Gupta said.

The health cards will allow senior citizens to access various essential health services, irrespective of their socio-economic background. According to the Delhi government, this initiative is designed to cater to a population segment that often faces barriers to timely medical treatment.

Comprehensive Health Coverage for Low-Income Families

The scheme also aims to provide comprehensive health coverage to the most needy, with a special focus on 6.54 lakh of Delhi’s poorest families. As part of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), beneficiaries will receive up to INR 5 lakh health coverage.

Senior citizens over 70, who may already be eligible based on their economic status, will also be included.

In total, 4.5 lakh families with elderly members are expected to benefit from this coverage, which will help address medical expenses that may otherwise be unaffordable for these vulnerable individuals.

Expanding Coverage Under 100-Day Action Plan

As part of its 100-day action plan, the newly formed BJP government focused on enrolling at least 1 lakh beneficiaries under the insurance scheme within 30 days. The state health department has already generated 1,71,482 Ayushman Bharat cards, and beneficiaries are being informed via SMS about their cards' availability.

The health insurance coverage is being extended to senior citizens as part of a broader effort to ensure that the elderly receive priority healthcare, particularly during times of need.
