IIT Kanpur Develops Real-Time Healthcare Portal for Maha Kumbh Mela 2025
The system enables field health workers to refer patients to appropriate hospitals based on real-time availability while integrating with an ambulance fleet to ensure timely transport.
IIT Kanpur, in collaboration with the Department of Medical Health & Family Welfare, Government of Uttar Pradesh, and ICICI Foundation for Inclusive Growth, has developed the Real-Time Availability and Referral Portal (RT-BARP) to improve healthcare services during Maha Kumbh Mela 2025.
This web-based platform will facilitate real-time data collection of admitted patients across multiple hospitals in the event area, ensuring efficient medical management.
RT-BARP enables seamless transfer of patients between different levels of healthcare facilities, including primary, sector, and tertiary hospitals.
The system allows field health workers to refer patients to appropriate hospitals based on real-time availability.
Additionally, it integrates with an ambulance fleet, ensuring timely patient transport based on referral data.
This system allows hospitals to prepare in advance for patient arrivals by sharing medical records and essential information, reducing delays in critical care.
It also helps in resource allocation by providing a comprehensive overview of reported diseases during the event.
Extensive Healthcare Network for Maha Kumbh
The RT-BARP system covers a network of healthcare facilities, including:
- 10 first aid posts
- 8 sector hospitals
- 2 infectious disease hospitals
- 2 subcentral and 1 central hospital in the Maha Kumbh area
- 5 major government hospitals in Prayagraj, designated as referral centers
This structured healthcare network ensures timely medical assistance for the millions of pilgrims attending the Maha Kumbh.
Scalability for Future Large-Scale Events
Speaking about the initiative, IIT Kanpur Director Manindra Agrawal stated that RT-BARP enhances emergency response efficiency and could serve as a scalable model for future Kumbh Melas and Magh Melas.
The system aims to improve critical care accessibility during high-footfall religious gatherings by streamlining coordination between hospitals, field workers, and ambulances.
The government plans to expand the RT-BARP system statewide in the coming months, ensuring better healthcare management in future mass gatherings.
