Southern Railway has introduced a telemedicine network to enhance access to specialist and super-specialist care for patients in remote railway health units.

The system was officially inaugurated by General Manager R N Singh at the Southern Railway Headquarters Hospital in Perambur.

This integrated facility, developed under the Government of India’s e-Sanjeevani scheme, connects divisional hospitals and remote health units with the headquarters hospital.

It enables real-time video consultations and live sharing of diagnostics such as ECGs and X-rays, allowing remote medical officers to coordinate directly with specialists in Perambur for quicker, more informed clinical decisions.

Officials highlighted that the telemedicine system, which proved critical during the COVID-19 pandemic, is now the first such initiative in Indian Railways to offer this level of connected care.

During the launch, Singh participated in a live consultation with the Divisional Railway Hospital in Madurai. He also reviewed digital queue management systems and new signage boards at the OPD block in Perambur.

Singh emphasized the need to ensure high-speed internet access across all railway health units to support the system’s effectiveness.
