Sri Chitra Tirunal Institute & BARC Develops Indigenous Deep Brain Stimulator
The project has been supported by the Technical Research Centre of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.
Sri Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, in collaboration with the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), has developed an indigenous Deep Brain Stimulator (DBS).
The moves aim at treating movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease and dystonia. The project has been supported by the Technical Research Centre of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.
Further, the DBS system has been designed to address India’s specific healthcare requirements while remaining cost-effective.
According to the institute, the project has completed its proof of concept phase and is now being transferred to Shree Pacetronix, an Indian manufacturer of implantable medical devices. This move is expected to enable scalable production and make the technology more widely available.
The development is seen as a significant step in advancing indigenous neurotechnology, with potential to expand access to advanced care for patients with neurological disorders.
